Shannon Clegg's Floral Sculptures
It started with the lucky discovery of a vintage Victorian wooden tie press abandoned at a London car boot market. The find, rehomed in Shannon’s London studio, was deconstructed to explore a new way of the traditional 2D craft technique of pressing flowers. To further develop the process, she based her research at The Herbarium at The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, looking through archival methods for storing pressed flowers and the tools and equipment used by their botanists to collect flowers from around the globe.
Investigating the various traditional ceramic and millinery mold-making techniques, she created a unique hand molding technique to form and press fresh plant material three-dimensionally into beautiful and poetic 3D botanical sculptures.
Each vase-like piece is a one-off, handmade from a delicate lattice of natural stems and petals that takes weeks to form.
