Julien Mauve, visual artist and musician, explores persistent dystopia through stagings inspired by myths and legends. His visual narratives question our future in the face of contemporary threats, reflecting on what the world would become without us. Mauve has published two books with Editions Poursuite: L'Indifférence des étoiles (2016) and Titanic Orchestra (2017). His work has earned him several prestigious awards, including the SFR Jeunes Talents in 2013, the Sony World Photography Award in 2016 and the Bourse Du Talent in 2018.
By photographing L'île aux libellules (Akitsu Shima), Julien Mauve proposes to rediscover HyBrazil, a ghost island mapped since 1325, supposedly home to an advanced civilization hidden by fog but that had vanished from maps by 1850. The island represents the power of nature in the Japanese imagination, and its remains bear witness to a vanished society, enveloped by luxuriant nature that seems to be reclaiming its rights. The question remains: are these sites abandoned or isolated from the rest of humanity?
